A castoff is an estimate of the number of pages in a book made prior to the actual pages being typeset. It is used to get initial printing estimates early in the publishing process. The page count derived via a castoff includes all pages, including blanks, roman-numeraled frontmatter pages, arabic-numeraled body pages and any inserts.
