Slow Color: A Practical Guide to Natural Dyeing in the North is a Kickststarter nonfiction book written by Pamala Weber and published by Tinderbox Editions. Slow Color is the most recent Kickstarter book printing we’ve shipped out at Bookmobile.
The Kickstarter
Pamala and Tinderbox Editions ran a great Kickstarter campaign and raised $6,172 to bring this guide about naturally dyeing yarn and fibers in the North to life. Slow Color draws on Pamala’s years as a fiber artist and educator to show readers how to dye yarn, plant a dye garden, with dyeing recipes and knitting patterns also included.
Slow Color is also the launch of a new series of books from Tinderbox, called Tinderbox by Hand, dedicated to crafts, slow living, and community. Tinderbox’s previous titles were poetry and essays, so Kickstarting to produce and print this full-color book with a healthy budget was the way to go!
Kickstarter Book Printing at Bookmobile
I worked with Molly Sutton Kiefer, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Tinderbox Editions, and Nikkita Cohoon, Tinderbox’s graphic designer, on the printing and production. I’ve worked with Molly on Tinderbox’s previous titles, which were all black-and-white interiors. For this color interior, Molly and I met to discuss paper choices (she went with 80-lb. white uncoated stock) and go over our file guidelines for color interiors and covers.
Slow Color is perfect bound with a 4-color cover on 10-pt. C1S stock with matte lay-flat lamination. It’s 7-1/2″ x 9″ (odd trim sizes are not a problem at Bookmobile), and the 70 interior pages printed 4-color on 80-lb. uncoated white stock. Determining the size and paper best suited to show off the vibrant color photography (example below) was critical!
