All the books we produce at Bookmobile get the same care, attention, quality checks, and schedule. As book lovers and print enthusiasts, we all browse the books we’re printing and end up with favorites–whether due to how the book is produced (nice use of a foil stamp), design, subject matter, writer, or even the title. A few recent favorites, and why, follow:

Dieter Slezak, Director of Operations

Touched by the Light: The Power to be Extraordinary, photography and text by Mark Alberhasky, published by IMAGEMA.com

Dieter chose Touched by the Light for a few reasons: design by Lindsay Lake, from our Design and Digital Department; great photography, it’s a large book (11” x 11”); and it was a split run–a paperback edition and a hardcover with a printed case edition.

Locker Room Talk: Women in Private Spaces, edited by Michelle Filkins and Margret Aldrich, published by Spout Press

Julie chose Locker Room Talk because she’s reading an extra copy we had, and loves it:

The essays are all stories of women talking with women, and the authors are amazing.  Kao Kalia Yang, Alison McGhee, Venus DeMars, among many. I haven’t read it all yet, but so far it’s really pulled me in, made me think, and remember past experiences.

From a Gift to a Collection: Igal & Diane Silber, published by the American Museum of Ceramic Art

I chose this exhibition catalog from the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA, because I throw pots as a hobby and always want to see more pots. Especially pots from Warern MacKenzie and Dame Lucie Rie, among others. The catalog has a great cover too, I like when a paperback cover image wraps from the front to the back cover.

Paperback specs

  • 9” x 12”, 96 pages
  • Interior 4-color on 100# gloss EuroArt Plus, 426 PPI, bleeds

World Ending Game, by Everest Pipkin

From Sean,

The front cover to this TTRPG (Table Top Role Playing game) module pulls no punches. The world is ending, and it’s never looked so good. The cover features a full color wraparound illustration of an asteroid striking the earth. The outer edges of the asteroid and the title feature a metallic gold foil stamp. The foil adds an additional highlight to the nighttime scene. The cover is coated with a soft touch lamination which gives it a texture similar to oil crayon on drawing paper. Past the cover, there are Rainbow Antique Saffron fly sheets which provide an appropriate accent to the gold foil adorned cover.

The interior is printed on 70lb uncoated white stock. Since the book is only 82 pages, a slightly thicker paper such as 70lb uncoated white increases the spine width which increases the presence of the title on a bookshelf. The uncoated paper gives the illustrations an additional layer of texture. The tooth of the stock can add some variance to a large area of flat color, which can provide illustrations with mechanical color separations a bit more of an organic look.
