We’ve printed three issues of the photography magazine MATTE. The editor Matthew Leifheit began printing MATTE with MagCloud but then found Bookmobile’s photography magazine printing to be a much better fit for quality and options.
MATTE Photography Magazine
Started in 2010 to showcase new photography, each issue of MATTE often features just one photographer, with a portrait of the photographer (photographed by Matthew) on the cover. Some issues have been curated by a guest artist around a theme (often queer issues) and some issues function as an exhibition catalog. MATTE is collected by museum libraries, including MoMA and Yale University’s Haas Arts Library. Matthew also sells copies at Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair, and year-round you can find copies at Printed Matter, MoMA PS1, and the International Center of Photography.
Photography Magazine Printing
Each issue of MATTE runs from 50 to 90 pages. The interior print 4-color on 80-lb. white uncoated stock and is perfect bound with a 4-color cover on 10-pt. C1S stock with matte (of course) lay-flat film lamination. Once files are submitted by Matthew, he sees proofs from us within a few days.
Unlike an offset printer, Bookmobile’s proofs demonstrate how your final book will appear. The interior proof is collated and trimmed to size, and it’s printed on the stock and from the printer to be used for the final run. The cover proof is laminated and is also printed on the stock and from the printer to be used for the final run. Print proofs are not bound.
Most color interiors and covers print on our Xerox 800/1000s. The Xerox 800/1000s prints at 2400 x 2400 DPI at a 200-line screen. Our Xerox uses less fuser oil than previous digital color printers, so it delivers a smooth, offset-like finish, and the color is more pure. As books and covers print on the 8000, they are automatically calibrated and adjusted for color, so even a long print run has consistent color throughout.
The Xerox 8000 prints outstanding midtones, crisp text, pure neutrals, detailed shadows, and bright highlights. It offers excellent photo rendering. Magazines and books print CMYK. If a Pantone color or RGB is specified instead, the Xerox 800/1000s convert it to CMYK. Clients can always view sample pages to ensure the seamlessness of the conversion and we strongly recommend following our color profile guidelines.
