We recently completed a custom art book printing, Connected, for the photographer Amy Lombard. Amy works in Brooklyn, New York, and in 2013 she started to photograph meetups. Many folks and articles bemoan that today’s internet culture and smartphones are disrupting community in the “real world.” Inspired by a Staten Island Pug Meetup she happened upon, Amy began to document how online communities meet “in real life” and how meeting a stranger from the internet is no longer taboo.
With support from the VSCO Artist Initiative™, Amy traveled the United States to document meetups ranging from the Connecticut Backgammon Club, to Eastern Mass Barefoot Hikers, and also, of course, Pokemon Go Weekly Adventure, among many others. Her photographs show how almost anyone can find community through the internet. As Amy says in the preface to Connected,
This work is as much an anthropological study of culture and community as it is my own personal ode to the internet. The act of making Connected into a book—a tangible and real object—replicates the experience of taking online culture into real life.
Custom Art Book Printing at Bookmobile
Connected is a bright, colorful book, and our 4-color print process kept all the images vibrant. It’s a hardcover with a square trim size—perfect for a VSCO or Instagram image. Instead of featuring a photo on every single pages, some photos have a facing page with just a primary color, plus the photo credit, like the spread below.
Connected is 6″ x 6″ with 92 pages printed 4-color on 100-lb. matte-coated white stock. It’s perfect bound and cased in with a bright yellow 4-color printed case with gloss lamination. Amy also chose printed end sheets, shown below.
