An extra margin printed outside the area of the page, so that when the final trimming is performed any images run right to the edge of the trim. Because binding and trimming equipment is only accurate within 1/16″ or so, bleed is necessary to ensure that there are no unsightly unprinted areas at the edge of the page. A normal bleed value is 1/8″.
