The Luminarts Legacy Society is made up of patrons who support the Luminarts Cultural Foundation, and it’s also the title of a hardcover book with a translucent dust jacket we recently printed. The foundation published the hardcover to thank its founding members. Based in Chicago, Luminarts was founded by the Union League Club of Chicago to support young Chicago writers, musicians, artists, and dancers with recognition and financial support through fellowships.
The Hardcover Printing
With a print run of just 100 copies, we worked with the artist Jon Satrom to use the best of Bookmobile’s print options to create a really beautiful hardcover. The interior features photographs and biographies of founding members of the Luminarts Legacy Society, alongside artwork, poetry, and quotes from Luminarts Fellows. Jon used the “low poly” style through the interior, a forward trend in graphic design. (“Low poly” was inspired by the 3D-modeling software that video-game architects use for design, and plays off the angles and facets of shapes.)
The interior printed 4-color on our 100-lb. uncoated white stock at 284 PPI, with interior bleeds.
The book was then perfect bound and cased in, with Rainbow turquoise endsheets, no headbands (the interior is only 56 pages, so the spine is too narrow for headbands), and a printed case with matte lamination. The printed case uses artwork from the painter Angel Otero, a Luminarts Fellow in Visual Arts.
The low poly style is carried through to the translucent dust jacket, which has minimal printing so that the Otero painting (Let Water Run, 2010) shows through.
Our translucent vellum stock is a 29-lb. cover weight. It’s great for a dust jacket and also works well over a hardcover with a plain case and foil stamp (By Way of Passing) or over a paperback (Parts of Speech). We’ve used this same translucent dust jacket stock for endsheets (unfortunately we don’t have pictures), and as a color insert (Useful Knowledge) or black-and-white insert (Sand Opera).
