The sculptor Will Clift is a new client for Bookmobile. Will came to us to print his exhibition catalog for the Gerald Peters Gallery in New York, New York, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. I love that we’re seeing more and more clients for art book printing at Bookmobile—it’s always fun to open the print files and see what the artist’s work and the book layout look like.

Will’s work explores “gesture in sculpture though the interaction of form and balance.” As he eloquently describes it,

My sculptures consist of intersecting parts that stand or suspend together in equilibrium. No part is extraneous, and the delicacy of this balance reveals the fine line between weight and weightlessness, motion and stillness. I’m trying to capture the moment between breathing in and breathing out, between being grounded and taking flight—the pure potential of movement that has not quite commenced. We as humans intuitively understand balance through our own bodies, ever since we learned to stand, to walk, to dance.

Will first requested a quote in early April, and we went back and forth quite a bit so he could get the most out of his printing while staying within his budget. I quoted various interior stocks, portrait versus landscape trim sizes, and paperback versus hardcover. I also mailed Will our paper stock sampler, and finally in late June, files for Forms in Balance arrived.

Will saw one set of printed proofs and had minor corrections. We revised the print files, sent him an eProof, and books shipped in mid-July. Will ended up going with a landscape book at 10″ x 8″, perfect bound, 56 pages, with the interior printed color on our 70-lb. uncoated white. The end result is a very handsome catalog of his work.
