En Route to Find an Armchair is the second custom art book we’ve produced for Lindsay Buchman. Lindsay is an interdisciplinary artist in Philadelphia whose practice, as her website describes, “explores print media, photography, video, installation, and writing. Pivoting between text and image, she is primarily concerned with language, mediation, and site.

Custom Art Book Printing

The first custom art book we printed for Lindsay was Y(OURS), in 2016. Y(OURS) is a 5-3/4″ x 8-1/4″ paperback with a black-ink interior on 70-lb. natural uncoated stock at 392 PPI. As you can see from the image above, Lindsay designed some interior pages with a full flood of black ink. Full black pages can be an issue for a printer—it’s difficult for an offset or digital printer to hold a single flat color consistently without streaking. But Lindsay designed the interior with intermittent black pages, which made it possible for the printer to hold the black well and without issue (though our printers did keep a close eye on the pages for streaking issues).

The cover of Y(OURS) is an 80-lb. vanilla Finch stock with no printing, matte lay-flat lamination, and a blind deboss on the front cover.

In the Spring of 2017, we printed En Route to Find an Armchair, which was also Lindsay’s thesis for her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design.

En Route to Find an Armchair is 9″ x 11-1/4″ with a 4-color interior on 80-lb. vanilla uncoated stock at 340 PPI. Lindsay again used full black printed pages, but also full pastel tinted printed pages—and all the colors worked well on the vanilla uncoated stock. At Bookmobile, we’re seeing more and more artists and designers working with uncoated vanilla, cream, or natural stocks for color interiors, instead of the more traditional coated white interior stocks.

En Route was perfect bound and cased in with Rainbow Antique black end sheets, red and white headbands, and a Pearl Linen khaki beige case with black foil stamps on the front cover and spine.
