3 Publishers Use POD, 3 Different Ways

LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Direct to consumer efficiency in a nutshell, with quality printing a museum can stand behind.

In the Spring of 2011, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art published  Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins. BookMobile started LACMA off with a short run, then we switched the title to true-one-at-a-time printing, so LACMA is not holding on to excessive inventory. Readers purchase the books through LACMA's website, orders are posted to BookMobile daily, BookMobile prints and fulfills every order, we post back tracking information, then invoice LACMA monthly for printing.

University of Minnesota Press

Looking for Resource Allocation and Productivity in National and International Agricultural Research? It's still available.

Established in 1925, the University of Minnesota Press has a long backlist of books. Older titles sell but not at quantities that make sense for offset runs or warehousing. Working with UMP's distributor, Chicago Distribution Center, BookMobile prepped 969 titles for POD and went live in June of 2009. The CDC posts orders to BookMobile twice daily, we print and fulfill every order, we post back tracking information, then invoice UMP monthly for printing.

Calamari Press

Handle your house sales with efficiency (while you're in Rome).

In the Spring of 2010 Derek White, owner of Calamari Press, moved to Rome, Italy. Lucky guy! Derek distributes his books with Small Press Distribution (SPD), but he also does strong and steady direct to consumer sales from his own website. BookMobile was already printing Calamari's short runs, so we converted the titles Derek chose to POD as well. Derek now has his direct-to-consumer website sales go through POD. When SPD needs more of a title for inventory, Derek will place a separate short run order of a larger quantity for them to take advantage of bulk printing savings.
